Khanga Design Challenge is a competition for the fashion designers with creative ideas, who combine data and fashion to produce wearable Khanga designs with the content stories and messaging inspired from the data findings on the sexual and reproductive health and Gender based Violence in Temeke District.
The competition supports and gives the fashion designers a platform to acquire knowledge, skills and improve data-use experiences, and finally use their talents to design Khanga with messaging that have the potential to raise the awareness, and call to action amongst community members and stakeholders on the problems around sexual reproductive health in Temeke. The challenge provides a platform for designers to use data to arm their communities with the information they need to advocate for smart decisions and better approaches to tackle those challenges. As a result, helping communities base their actions on accurate, accessible, and community based information.
The team behind Khanga design challenge believes that in order to pursue big ideas, and sharing better results, fashion designers need to be exposed to data use skills and knowledge to understand the health and gender based issues and problems so that to inform and inspire them on the designing of the khanga ideas and their messaging. We believe a well-designed Khanga mixed up with Data and creativity will result into not only raising awareness on sexual reproductive health and gender based violence matters, but also inspire conversation through the messaging around the khanga ideas. Fashion can always go beyond beautiful designs and ideas, and that is why we are bringing this challenge to you. Temeke is one among the Districts highly affected by Sexual Reproductive Health and gender based violence challenges in Tanzania, and one of the contributing factor is on the low awareness among community members on the good practices to ensure their well-being, therefore, Khanga Competition sets to challenge the norms where fashion is only used to entertain and leisure, but use its creativity and beauty to champion for change, specifically, inspire the improvement on community health, gender and livelihood for the Khanga designers. General Eligibility Criteria to Apply for the Khanga Competition
Applicant must be a currently working in fashion industry in Tanzania.
Applicant must be a citizen of Tanzania.
Applicant must be innovative, creative and self-motivated.
Applicants must be ready to implement their designs or scale-up a current projects to materialization.
Applicants must be willing to attend the workshops if his/her application will be selected, and fully participate in the next stage until final.
Applicants ideas must focus on gender based violence and sexual reproductive health matters.
Criteria for Selecting Winners
Artist work must carry health message specifically SRH and GBV theme.
Artist work should carry a strong message with a call to action.
Artist work must be creative, with innovative design clarity.
Originality.
Artist work must be Data driven (provide information community need to advocate for smart decisions and better approaches to tackle day to day challenges).
